As defined by
special act of the Florida legislature, the West Palm Beach Downtown
Development Authority (DDA) is an independent special taxing district
created in 1967 with a mission to:
Analyze
the economic conditions and changes occurring in the downtown area,
including the effect of such factors as metropolitan growth, traffic
congestion, parking, and structural obsolescence and deterioration.
Formulate
long-range plans for improving the appeal, use and public accessibility
of downtown facilities, remedying any deterioration of property
values and developing the downtown area.
Recommend
to the city, business owners and residents the best actions for
implementing downtown development plans.
Today, the
DDA leads a coordinated strategy of economic development, urban design,
and public services to strengthen Downtown as:
The
heart of West Palm Beach and the economic and cultural hub of the
region.
A
prosperous place for businesses and institutions.
An
attractive urban environment for visitors and residents.
A
vibrant place to live, work, and play.
Over the past 4 years, the downtown West Palm Beach
area evolved as a result of three key factors: the opening of CityPlace,
the development of nearby downtowns and City centers; and numerous
road construction projects. These factors along with an increase in
residential development in the area, create the distinct need to reposition
and redefine Downtown West Palm Beach with a new strategic plan and
targeted programs. |
